In the world of gaming, discovering hidden references and Easter eggs can be an exhilarating experience. Fans of the beloved Final Fantasy 7 franchise recently stumbled upon a clever nod to an incredibly obscure battle known as Test 0 in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

For those unfamiliar with Test 0, it was a rare encounter found only in original Japanese copies of Final Fantasy 7. Legend has it that fortunate players who ventured down the well at the start of Corel Prison could occasionally face off against dog-like adversaries named “Test 0.” Due to its rarity, only a select few have ever witnessed this encounter firsthand. Therefore, it is particularly exciting that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth directly references this hidden battle.
During an interview with Easy Allies, Naoki Hamaguchi, co-director of Rebirth, expressed his desire to include the Test 0 fight for those who remember it. Interestingly, neither Hamaguchi nor the rest of the Rebirth team fully comprehend the origins and purpose of Test 0 in the original game. It remains a mystery to this day.
“I don’t know if it was a bug or an Easter egg secretly inserted by the original developers. None of our team members were involved in creating Test 0 for the original game, so we are uncertain about its original intention,” Hamaguchi stated, as translated from Japanese. “However, I believed that players familiar with the original game would recognize and appreciate this reference, so I wanted to incorporate it into Rebirth.”
In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Hamaguchi felt that it would be strange to simply encounter Test 0 at the bottom of a well. To better align with the game’s universe, the developers created a unique arena specifically for this battle. While some players who are unaware of the reference may find the appearance of Test 0 foes peculiar, those who recognize its significance will undoubtedly appreciate this homage.
