Returning to the Western genre after more than 30 years, Mario Van Peebles showcases his love for this cinematic tradition. However, the film feels more like a pastiche than a groundbreaking addition to the genre.
The film’s diverse cast and inclusion of themes like reparations for Black slaves set it apart from traditional Westerns. Mario Van Peebles’ character, Chief, establishes himself as a badass reminiscent of his father Melvin’s Sweetback. He assembles a racially diverse gang, giving the film its title, and together they embark on a mission to retrieve stolen Confederate gold.
Outlaw Posse delivers a memorable villain in Angel, Chief’s former partner-in-crime seeking revenge and the stolen gold. The film also boasts a range of entertainingly colorful characters, including Stagecoach Mary portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg in a delightful cameo.
Despite its silliness, Outlaw Posse manages to be an enjoyable film, largely thanks to the terrific ensemble of veteran character actors who fully embrace its whimsical qualities. Mario Van Peebles, exuding the formidable charisma inherited from his father, gives a fitting tribute to the ‘OG Badass’.
