Hideo Kojima Invites Xbox Boss Phil Spencer to Traditional Japanese Purification Ceremony for Upcoming Horror Game OD
Renowned game developer Hideo Kojima recently shared an intriguing detail about his upcoming Xbox horror game, OD. In a recent episode of his HideoTube YouTube series, Kojima revealed that he had invited Xbox boss Phil Spencer and other members of the Microsoft gaming team to participate in a traditional Japanese purification ceremony.

During the episode, Kojima briefly discussed OD, also known as Overdose, but refrained from divulging any substantial information about the game. However, what caught my attention was a captivating photo he shared, featuring himself, Phil Spencer, and Xbox president Sarah Bond. In the picture, the trio can be seen wearing ceremonial sashes adorned with Japanese text, indicating their participation in the Oharai purification ceremony.

Kojima explained that due to the nature of OD being a horror game, he felt it was essential to cleanse the project and ward off any malevolent spirits. He likened this practice to the tradition of filmmakers and actors visiting shrines before making horror movies or dramas.
The Oharai ceremony, held biannually, is a ritual aimed at purifying a large group of people for various reasons. In this case, Kojima strongly suggested that the ceremony was performed to cleanse and purify his collaborative project with Xbox, OD. Given the unconventional and eerie nature of the game, such purification rituals seem fitting.
Exploring Fear and Blurring Boundaries: The Vision of OD
While the video didn’t provide much insight into OD’s gameplay or storyline, Kojima did mention that the game would explore the concept of fear and blur the boundaries between video games and movies. This aligns with Kojima’s recent endeavors, including Death Stranding 2 and an untitled action-espionage game, where he seeks to create immersive experiences that transcend traditional gaming boundaries.
OD is just one of many highly anticipated horror games on the horizon, and fans are eagerly awaiting its release to experience the spine-chilling thrills it promises to deliver. As more information about OD is gradually revealed, gamers can expect to delve deeper into Kojima’s unique vision and his collaboration with the Xbox team.
