Family Star Movie Review: A Disappointing Attempt at Drama

The recently released Telugu film, Family Star, starring Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur, fails to live up to its potential as a compelling family drama. Directed by Parasuram, who previously worked with Deverakonda in the hit film Geetha Govindam, the movie falls short due to its weak plot and lack of clarity in storytelling.

The story revolves around Govardhan (Vijay Deverakonda), who shoulders the responsibility of managing his joint family. The film explores the challenges faced by Govardhan’s family due to his older brother’s issues and the entry of wealthy entrepreneur Indu (Mrunal Thakur) into his life. However, the conflicts presented in the film lack depth and fail to engage the audience.

Vijay Deverakonda delivers a convincing performance as Govardhan, showcasing his finesse as an actor. He effectively portrays the character’s struggles without overacting. Mrunal Thakur, on the other hand, starts off well but gradually becomes uninteresting in her role. The chemistry between the lead pair remains underutilized, and the overall execution of their characters is disappointing.

Parasuram’s direction and storytelling leave much to be desired. The plot lacks originality and fails to provide a solid foundation for the narrative. The first half of the film is passable, mainly due to Vijay Deverakonda’s screen presence and a few well-written dialogues. However, the second half, set in the U.S., suffers from poor writing choices and questionable sequences, such as Vijay trying to escape white women in downtown New York.

The film also fails to make effective use of its supporting cast, including senior actor Jagapathi Babu and comedian Vennela Kishore. The music by Gopisundar is disappointing, and the background score does little to enhance the viewing experience. The cinematography by KU Mohanan is average, lacking any standout visuals. Editing by Marthand K. Venkatesh is a mixed bag, with unnecessary scenes and pacing issues.

Despite a few well-crafted dialogues and a subtle message, Family Star ultimately falls flat due to its age-old plot, weak conflicts, and cringe-worthy American episodes. The production values are adequate, but they do not compensate for the film’s overall shortcomings.
