During a discussion at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Ruffalo shared details about a conversation he had with Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige. Feige asked Ruffalo what he would like to do with the Hulk character if given the opportunity for a standalone movie. Ruffalo expressed his desire to explore the character’s transformation from a raging maniac to a more integrated persona. However, Feige informed him that a standalone Hulk film was not in the works.

Ruffalo stated, “Kevin [asked me], ‘What would you like to do?’ He said, ‘What would you do if you had a standalone Hulk movie?’ And I said, ‘Well, I’d like to take him from this raging maniac to kind of this integrated character.’ And he was like, ‘Okay, we’ll do that over the course of four movies. We’ll never give you a standalone Hulk, let’s just get that – I don’t mean to burst your bubble… but that’s not happening.”

The news of no standalone Hulk movie has disappointed some fans who were hoping to see the character take center stage once again. However, others argue that the Hulk’s role as part of an ensemble is preferable to a potentially lackluster standalone film, referring to the 2003 Hulk movie.

It’s worth noting that Ruffalo recently sparked speculation about the Hulk’s return during the same discussion. However, sources clarified that he will not be reprising his role in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World movie, debunking the rumors.

In recent years, Ruffalo has taken a break from MCU movies, with his last appearance in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. He has since ventured into other projects, including She-Hulk and What If…?, along with non-superhero films such as I Know This Much Is True, The Adam Project, and the upcoming Poor Things.

As for the MCU, fans can look forward to the release of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. The first trailer for the highly anticipated film premiered during the Super Bowl, offering glimpses of Easter eggs, X-Men cameos, R-rated humor, and discussions about Doctor Doom.

While a standalone Hulk movie may not be on the horizon, fans can still enjoy the character’s presence in future MCU stories. Mark Ruffalo’s portrayal of the Hulk has left a lasting impact, and it will be exciting to see how the character continues to evolve within the shared universe.
